BarCraft Oshawa for MLG Orlando! Oct 16th

SpoofIT has organized a "BarCraft" event for UOIT and DC students and anyone in the Oshawa area. BarCraft is a grass roots movement to bring eSports to bars in cities throughout North America. UOIT and Durham College have huge love for Starcraft and we'll be spectating the exciting finals of the professional StarCraft 2 tournament at MLG Orlando. Starcraft has been hailed for years as the most exciting video game to spectate, and with 14 thousand dollars on the line at MLG Orlando it's sure to be heated. Come out to Shagwell's on Sunday October 16th for what blogTO calls "the new Hockey Night in Canada," BarCraft. We'll have a high quality stream and big projection screen!

Yes, there will be food, drinks (i.e. beer), and friendly heckeling.

Internet Security Threat Seminar

Symantec's Marc Fossi will be giving a presentation about current internet security threats right here at UOIT. This is a free event but you must RSVP by clicking here.

Marc will provide the key findings of Symantec's industry-leading report, which provides a detailed analysis and discussion of internet threat activity. He will discuss topics such as internet attacks, vulnerabilities, malicious code, phishing and spam affecting businesses as well as end users. Marc will also take a deeper dive into the Stuxnet Worm, the first worm targeting industrial software and equipment.

LAN WAR

This has been in the making for some time now. We're really excited to announce UOIT's first LAN WAR! There will be tournaments, prizes, Xbox360 gaming, PlayStation3 gaming, ownage, PC gaming, all in an attempt to break the Guiness World Record! We're trying to break this world record for longest LAN party which is currently held by a University in Malaysia. LAN WAR will hopefully become a UOIT tradition, regardless of whether we break any records, so help start something big and be able to say you attended the very first annual UOIT LAN WAR!

This even is a collaboration between SpoofIT, Campus Video Gaming Federation, SIFE @ UOIT, and many others. SpoofIT would like to thank everyone involved, including attendees!

IT-Security Reading Group

The IT Security Reading Group (IT-SRG) is a group of UOIT students (graduate and senior undergraduate) and faculty interested in computer security and privacy. IT-SRG meets to critically review and discuss current security research papers. This term IT-SRG will review selected 2010 papers from USENIX Security, ACM CCS, and IEEE Oakland. All interested faculty and students are invited to join by contacting Julie Thorpe (Julie.Thorpe@uoit.ca).

The first discussion is on the paper "Testing Metrics for Password Creation Policies by Attacking Large Sets of Revealed Passwords". Attendees should read it beforehand.

Guest speaker Michael Assante, a leading cybersecurity expert, is coming to UOIT to offer his thoughts on the latest challenges, trends and opportunities. Topics include a history of cybersecurity, the life-cycle of advanced malware and the political impact of cybersecurity.

Speaker Background:

Assante has held key posts in industrial control system security research at the Idaho National Laboratory and then as chief security officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which is charged with power grid reliability. He was one of the experts that addressed U.S. senators last year about the dangers of a Windows-specific computer worm known as Stuxnet. Assante is also the president of the U.S. National Board of Information Security Examiners (NBISE).

SpoofIT has a website again!

As some of you may have noticed, our website has been very bland for a while. It's a long story but basically our good friend hosting the website decided to scrap it without telling us. Since then we'd been hosting it on Mike's (former SpoofIT Exec, graduated 2010) computer at home.

Now we've officially got a website going again. It's not much, but we're working to add content and get it connected with our facebook, twitter, and official calendar. Check back often for updates!
